19th Century French Painted Marriage Domed Box from Normandy
An attractive beautifully hand painted domed 'Coffre de Mariage' with paper decoration to the inside
A rare collectable in this condition, Originates from Normandy (Northern France)
Traditional boxes like these were often custom-made and hand- painted with Flowers and birds and other symbols (for prosperity)
These boxes were for the new wife to store her money and jewellery when moving to her husband's house and after the wedding feast she would also store her wedding head-dress (or trousseau).
This is a nice example with its original hinges, wire handle and metal lock still with its key.
