John Wainwright was baptised at Bunny, Nottinghamshire in 1751. He was the son of Watch & Clockmaker Humphrey Wainwright (also baptised at Bunny, 1724)
John commenced business as a clockmaker in Bridlesmith Gate, Nottingham in 1779. He was enrolled as a Burgess on 6th July, 1792.
His workshop was in a room above his shop with an entrance in Pepper Street, in the city of Nottingham.
