Arts and Crafts Oak Hall Cupboard in the manner of Liberty c.1900

This is a very beautiful solid oak cupboard with original Athelstan door inset with hand stained marquetry panel - a woodland view with the setting sun on the horizon - inlaid with exotic timbers including fiddle mahogany, walnut, birch and satinwood.  The marquetry  reminiscent of Emile Galle. Lovely original stylised escutcheon and working lock.

A double wardrobe with this door panel design is illustrated in Liberty Design, Barbara Morris, London 1889, p.113. The shape of this wardrobe is different but relates closely to a wardrobe from a bedroom suite, probably designed by Leonard Wyburd, circa 1899 (see Liberty`s 1875-1975 Exhibition catalogue p.430)

The cupboard is solid oak throughout - even the backboards are solid oak.

Made as a hall cupboard, it would work equally well as a handsome dwarf wardrobe, ideal for a guest room or a child’s bedroom.  Inside it has four original brass hooks (two to the back panels and one to each side panel) and is fitted with two original hanging rails.  The door opens and closes smoothly and the two hanging rails are strong and made to hold a good amount of weight.

The cupboard is very heavy and made from substantial planks of oak cut to show the medullary rays.  It is robust and in very good condition.  The marquetry panel with a little natural shrinkage but nothing significant and there are minor dings and dents to the wardrobe consistent with age and careful use.

Wonderful linear shape and the typically Liberty hooded cornice.

This is a high quality piece of furniture over 100 years old with a natural waxed finish and an attractive warm honey oak colour.

Dimensions are: Width is 45 inches, depth is 17.75 inches and height is 58.5 inches.

About me and my promise to you:

I have always had a passion for antiques and like many collectors I have spent every spare moment rummaging around antique shops, house sales and auctions.

Four years ago I decided to make my passion my full time profession and since then I have worked alongside a qualified antiques dealer who is the third generation of her family to be ‘in the trade’.

I want to earn repeat business from happy customers so am determined to keep my prices very low, to offer excellent value, and to send you really lovely items which are fairly and correctly described and fit for purpose.

I am not trying to make my fortune - just hoping to earn a small living wage and to stay working in the field I have chosen and love.

If I do not have the right piece in my stock for you, do please let me know if you what you are looking for and I will try to find it for you at a reasonable price and on a no obligation basis.

Any questions at all or if you would like to view my stock in Sussex, please do call me on 07407 633 233

Thank you,

Rhiannon
