VINTAGE HOUSE-ABOUT US
are a small family run company based in South Devon and have been
restoring furniture for several years after deciding to turn our hobby
into a business. We professionally restore antique and vintage pieces,
painting some which need updating and preserving those which look
handsome left untouched. We love anything old and antique and take great
care in the preparation and repair of all items, treating woodworm and
fixing loose joints as a matter of course.
ESAVIAN SECTIONAL BOOKCASE
This is a very useful piece of furniture which dates to around 1900, this classic sectional bookcase is a timeless piece which will provide very useful storage for books in any home.
Made by Esavian, the educational supply association, this bookcase was part of their range of affordable quality furniture that, for its time, was very modern and forward thinking in its design and construction.
For its age it's in pretty good condition with four stackable sections made of wood, all have their original double glazed doors fitted with brass drop handles.
The top is finished with a removable plinth and the 'Esavian' makers label is fixed on two of the doors. Each section fixes together with metal brackets underneath, these simply swivel into place to secure the parts together.
The interior shelves are adjustable, they sit on brass supports and can be removed, the undersides are unpainted.
The wood is dark with an ebonized looking finish, it has a polished finish with marks of age and use, various small dents and knocks here and there which give it a nicely aged look.
The bookcase interiors have been hand painted in white chalk paint by the previous owners, this is a little rustic looking with a few paint drips here and there, I do think the paintwork contrasts rather well against the dark finish of the exterior.
height- 73 & 1/4 inches
width- 38 & 1/2 inches
depth- 10 & 1/2 inches at the top
9 inches at the sides
top section- 8"high x 8"deep
middle two sections- 19 & 3/4"high x 8"deep
bottom section- 13 & 1/2" high x 10 & 3/4" deep
The measurements are taken at the widest points.
The bookcase is in good structural condition but has many cosmetic marks of age and use.
There is a small chip of wood missing from the bottom front right hand corner of the base and a few dents along the left hand front corner edge. There are some areas of fading and marks to the ebonized finish, especially on the right hand side.
The painted interior has some paint drips and small areas of wear near the doors.
The back of the bookcase has evidence of old woodworm holes, these are no longer active but we have treated them as a precaution.
