The box-bed (or closed bed,) is an enclosed bed that looks
like a cupboard ,
sometimes open but mostly with a single or double sliding doors The form originates in Western Europe from
late medieval times.
The box-bed is closed on all sides by panels of wood, or set into a wall of
the dwelling One enters it by removing
curtains, opening a hinged or sliding door or doors on the front.
These were used until the 19th or very early 20th
century. In early times and until the 19th century they were a safe
place to sleep out of reach of the pigs and fowl which often also lived in the
largely single room cottages and even doubled up as somewhere to leave small
children safe from wolves when the parents went out to work in the fields!
From the late 18th and 19th century many were
converted as this one was into fine armoires or bookcases.
